Setting up your Machine and Quilting Area

Begin with a clutter-free and well-lit work space.

Adjust your chair height so that your feet are flat on the floor. For good posture, your forearms (when resting on the machine bed) and thighs should be parallel to the floor. Pull your chair in close to your machine and keep your back straight. Pull your machine close to the edge of the table to prevent arm and back strain.

Place your extension or acrylic table on your machine for extra work space. Adjust the extension table legs so that there is a smooth transition from the table to the machine bed. Bumps from table to bed will interfere with the rhythm of machine quilting.

Make your extension table and machine bed as slippery as possible so that your quilt will glide over the surface. I am very fond of the “Supreme Slider” which easily attaches to your machine. You can also achieve this with a silicone spray made specifically for this purpose.

Install a new needle. I prefer a machine quilting needle size 90/14. A new needle in the proper size will easily penetrate the Pima cotton and will also form a better stitch.

Install your free motion foot and drop your feed dogs. Feed dogs down will allow you to freely move your quilt about. When this happens, you are in control of your stitch length so practice moving in a flowing motion on your practice quilt sandwich.
